GLOBAL TALENTS DIGITAL by Evelyn Mora

The Sustainable Edition of Global Talents Digital took place online on September 4th to 6th. For this international event, 100 participants from 34 countries and areas had joined their forces to cover the sustainability issue in fashion and beyond. Fashion brands practicing upcycling, recycling, zero waste and slow fashion, were mixed up with digital and virtual wears at Global Talents Digital.

Many professionals in the fashion industry have stated that their main doubts about the digital taking over the physical in the fashion industry are associated with is the lack of physical touch – having no opportunity to touch the clothes, feel the fabric – and, hence, the lack of emotional connection. However, I personally got a lot of vibes when watching Global Talents Digital.

If we think about it, people don't have a chance to feel clothes and the material when shopping on e-commerce websites, much like consumers don't get to go to the fashion shows before purchasing the collections. So could the sustainable future of fashion be actually locally produced fashion shows like this, which are later showcased and streamed at the offices of the buyers using hologram technology?

When watching the shows, some of the participants I loved were, for example, ADI KARNI VAGT (Israel) using mixed disciplines, Alexander Pevchev (Russia) with multiple environments involving several artists, Alexandr Zabei Vorota (Qatar) with his Octopus skin experiments, Timo Helgert (Germany) and AM By Anggiasari (Indonesia).

Some shows have really fascinated me and I've discovered new artists, I personally would love to work with in the future. I absolutely loved Annibale Siconolfi aka INWARD (Italy) and 404 Studio (Spain) whose content was fantastic, and although they didn't do it in 3D, I have a feeling it would look fantastic in that format as well.

I generally prefer digital content delivered in 3D, but some of the fashion films, like the one by Rosie Ahmadi, was beautiful and empowering nevertheless – carrying something very feminine and strong features in the video.

Some of the other obvious favorites include CHAIN (Argentina) and NS Gaia (India), who were showcased on EcoVillage at Helsinki Fashion Week in 2018. I also enjoyed the video of Hilal Sevencan (Turkey), who participated in our Digital Village designer residency this year.

I was also absolutely excited about Jon Noorlander's addictive content that you can get hooked on for days!

Other favorites that I would like to mention include UNHUEMAN, as well as Strogo vintage and Svalka - Russian vintage and second stores and also two new thrifting destinations that are now absolutely on my list for the next time I visit Russia.

When I watched the Ginger Ocean (Russia) show, I couldn't help but wonder - why not filming the video in the real ocean since we still have some left?;) It's another thing to consider for digital events - when creating a digital fashion show, so many new opportunities arise that are usually restricted on a physical one. For instance, something as simple as music is a very important element that is often underestimated in the digital world. It is in essence one of the main most important aspects of communication in such creative outputs - it heavily affects our emotions when watching the show, makes the experience more immersive, and the frequency of the soundtrack can even influence our perception of time and video duration.

The Sustainable Edition of Global Talents Digital is a great initiative that, I am sure, will be exciting to develop further, advancing the digital aspect of it even more. Although, what we currently have to keep in mind at this point is that, most importantly, sustainability should not be perceived as a "project" or a "theme" for an event – sustainability is a mission. Until we have fixed the damage we have created and stopped climate change our mission goes on and it should touch all part of our lives, not just businesses.

So, next edition, let's aim to inspire people to present creative solutions in using digital tools to tackling the environmental challenges.
